Digestion is the process by which the body breaks down the food we eat into usable components. When we put food into our mouths digestion has already started, because digestion means breaking food down into smaller molecules, which are then used to fuel the energy, growth, and functioning of the body at many levels.
Although we might not think of it as such, the stomach is a muscular organ that contracts and expands in order to mix the food with digestive juices. The most important part of digestion takes place in the small intestine, where most chemical digestion and absorption of food occurs. As the liquid food paste travels through the small intestine, nutrients are absorbed and enter the bloodstream, traveling to all the body's cells and systems to maintain health and replenish the immune system. The intestines complete the process of digestion.
Digestive Disorders can be confusing!
Here are some definitions. Remember that it is always best to consult your doctor for advice on chronic digestive problems that do not respond to changes in diet and lifestyle
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
also known as 'spastic colon' is one of the most common chronic health disorders in the world and affects up to 20% of the population. It is a dysfunction of the bowel and large intestine, causing lower abdominal pain, cramping, constipation and diarrhoea. Causes have not been conclusively identified, but are thought to involve problems in communication between the bowel and the brain.
Crohn’s Disease
is one of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. It causes inflammation in the digestive tract (usually the small intestine), resulting in chronic pain and diarrhea. There may also be rectal bleeding, weight loss and even fever. There are different theories about what causes Crohn’s Disease, but many doctors believe that the immune system reacts to a virus or a bacterium, causing chronic inflammation in the intestine. Crohn’s Disease tends to run in families.
Diverticulosis
is a condition in which 'pockets' or diverticula form on the wall of the colon or the large intestine, usually on the left side. This is a result of weaknesses in the bowel wall. Symptoms include left lower abdominal pain, diarrhoea, cramps, changes in bowel habits or even rectal bleeding . Diverticulosis is associated with a diet high in processed foods and low in fibre and fluids. Diverticulitis occurs when there is an infection in the ’pockets’ or diverticula of the intestinal wall. Diverticulosis can be effectively treated by increasing dietary fibre and fluid intake and using herbs to soothe and tone the lining of the digestive tract.
Ulcerative Colitis
is also an Inflammatory Bowel Disease and is associated with inflammation and ulcers in the inner lining of the colon and rectum. People who suffer from ulcerative colitis usually alternate between periods of flare ups and remission, often influenced by stress, diet or illness. Symptoms include rectal bleeding, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and cramping and an urgent need to empty the bowels.
Gastritis
is an inflammation of the stomach lining. It may be caused by eating spoiled food, by bacteria, viruses, by certain chemicals, as well as by stress and lifestyle factors. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhoea and cramps. Gastritis may be acute or chronic. People who suffer from chronic gastritis should investigate dietary changes, stress management and removal of alcohol, cigarettes and spices.
GERD or Acid Reflux Disease
is a condition in which the stomach acid 'backs up' or refluxes into the oesophagus due to dysfunction of the lower oesophageal sphincter. This causes pain and burning, often called heartburn - although it has nothing to do with the heart. While we all have heartburn at some stage, persistent heartburn (more than two or three episodes a week) may suggest Acid Reflux Disease. Other symptoms include a sour taste in the mouth, swallowing difficulties, upset stomach and even coughing and hoarseness. Some causes of Acid Reflux Disease, or GERD, include a hiatal hernia, obesity, smoking, alcohol abuse and certain foods. Symptoms can be greatly relieved or prevented by lifestyle and dietary changes as well as the use of herbs known to promote healthy digestion. If symptoms persist, it is always wise to consult your doctor to prevent further complications.
are all symptoms which we experience from time to time. If you are occasionally troubled by these symptoms, you can obtain quick relief by using Native Remedies DigestAssist Drops, specially formulated for rapid relief of uncomfortable digestive complaints. If you have these symptoms regularly, this may indicate incorrect diet, unhealthy lifestyle or one of the conditions described above.
The natural way
Naturopaths recognize that the whole person must be treated in order to maximize health and promote healthy digestive systems. Rather than treating problems in isolation, naturopaths prefer to take a holistic look at the individual and encompass a variety of factors to include diet, lifestyle, personality type, surroundings and emotional elements.
Herbal and homeopathic remedies have been used for centuries to assist with healthy digestion, and there is documented use of herbs to promote the digestive process in writings as far back as ancient Egypt.
Cultures throughout the world have relied on digestive herbs as part of traditional medicine with excellent results. Even today, herbs and spices are used not only for their delicious taste but also to assist with digestion - helping to promote trouble-free digestive functioning and promote harmony and balance in the digestive tract - naturally! These positive benefits have been borne out by research. (Hashimoto, K., Satoh, K., Murata, P., Makino, B., Sakakibara, I., Kase, Y., Ishige, A., Higuchi, M., and Sasaki, H. “Component of Zingiber officinale that improves the enhancement of small intestinal transport.” Planta Med. 2002;68(10):936-939)

"I have struggled with IBS for years and years and used to despair that I could lead a normal life. My doctor told me to ’live with it’ . I wanted to let you know that I have tried a huge number of ’solutions’’ including natural remedies and prescription medicines, but none have come close to helping me like your products have. I take Gastronic Dr. every day and I NEVER go out without the DigestAssist Drops! If I do have an attack I can control it quite quickly and the symptoms are far less severe. I have to confess that I smoke and like my toddy at night, but I think that if I reduce or stop this as advised by Michele, I will finally have complete relief, no thanks to my doctor but lots of thanks to Native Remedies!" Carlos
"I used to be able to eat anything but as I got older I had to be so careful with my food. Things improved after I cut out dairy products but I was always worrying about stomach cramps, heartburn and gas. One good thing was that I lost weight but I did not enjoy my food and even stopped going out. Since using your products, things have changed for the better and I can control my symptoms by myself without chewing on expensive tablets all the time." Lydia
"Thanks to your sound advice and superb products, my digestive problems are a thing of the past. I have recommended them to a girlfriend who has Crohn’s Disease and she’s already seeing results after only two weeks." Sidney

"A double-blind randomized controlled trial of ginger for the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting". Anaesthesia 1995;23:449-52) Furthermore, in animal studies this herb has been investigated for its ability to support the entire gastric system. (al-Yahya MA, Rafatullah S, Mossa JS, et al. "Gastro-protective activity of ginger in albino rats". Am J Chinese Med 1989;17:51-6)
Fennel

Peppermint
(Mentha piperita) is one of the most well-known of the mint herbs, has been used for centuries in many cultures. Numerous modern studies have investigated its properties for digestive support. Mentha piperita supports the digestive tract and the flow of natural digestive juices and bile, thereby assisting healthy digestion. It helps to relax the muscles of the digestive tract and supports the flow of natural digestive juices and bile, thereby supporting the body to effectively digest and process food.(Taylor BA, Luscombe DK, Duthie HL. "Inhibitory effect of peppermint on gastrointestinal smooth muscle" Gut. 1983;24:A992). Peppermint has also been shown to support healthy digestion by calming the stomach in even the most sensitive stomachs. (Kline RM, Kline JJ, Di Palma J, et al.
